1. Identify the subject of the painting.
The subject of this painting is the open road.

2. Find details that help locate the scene in a particular time or place.
The time period of this scene is from sometime in the past 50 years, due to the paved road. Seeing that the road is very flat, it is more than likely that this scene depicts the American plains or the Midwest.

3. Study the way the artist created the setting. Is the setting highly detailed or more abstract.
This painting is fairly detailed, considering the simple subject.

4. Analyze the importance of setting in the painting. Is the setting simply part of the background, or does it take on a more dominant role?
The setting of this painting is the subject, so obviously it plays a very dominant role in the piece.

5. Think about how the colors and shapes in the painting help create the mood.
The colors and lines of this road give a sense of loneliness and a possible isolated mood. I think the artist used a dull blue and the darker color of the road to depict this. Yet, there are three golden lines, one from the road, and two from the horizon, which all point to the center of the painting, which lies at the heart of the horizon. At this exact point where these lines meet, the colors are at their brightest. I think this contrast in color represents a sense of hope for what lies ahead for the driver.
